I've heard of these but hadn't seen them yet, at least not in our yard. Japanese Beetles have invaded our flowers and garden. They raise one of their hind legs to scare off would be attackers or picture-takers in this case. In an effort to control them and have some garden vegetables left, I did some research on how best to control and deter them from their munching activities. One of the deterrents is: if you see and kill them on their eating grounds, leave the carcass behind and it will keep other beetles from eating in that area.
I mentioned this to a friend and she suggested to make totems on toothpicks around our garden to ward them off. I took her up on this suggestion and then my visiting nephew made the sign for a verbal warning. You can see the resulting picture below.

The beetles keep disappearing off of the toothpicks so I assume the birds are using them as their own shish-kabob buffets. Maybe at least if I increase the bird traffic, they will keep the beetles at bay.

We had the same problem-we just went out and bought some stuff called Sevin and sprayed it on our plants. Seemed to work because they aren't there now. :)
I find the totem method much more fun.
