1) Firefox Release candidate 2.0: I was an early Firefox adapter and jumped on updating to 2.0 this week when it became available. One of the premier features of Firefox is its “tabbed browsing” option—(you know it’s good because MS has copied it into Explorer 7 finally). With 2.0, Firefox has added a “close box” on the tab which is a very hand feature. You will appreciate this if you had used Firefox before and right-clicked to open a link in a new tab and accidentally clicked on “close all other tabs”. With the box you simply left click on it as if it was a window close box and the tab closes. Another related feature, there is an option to “restore closed tabs” now so if you had the aforementioned problem you have a rescue option. Tip for updating—before running the installation from the downloaded set-up icon…do a CTR-ALT-DEL and make sure any prior “firefox.exe” is closed. If present it will prevent your bookmarks from properly loading when updating (but they are not lost). There is another scenario which can cause a failure to load bookmarks, if this occurs go to their help site and follow the appropriate instructions (as I had to do).
2) I’m a Yahoo’ian (was too old to ever be a Yahooligan) so these two tips will probably mean more to you if you are a Yahoo’ian as well.
Widgets—very handy little applets that run on your home desktop. There are numerous widgets to choose from. The one that initiated this note is the Yahoo-Notepad widget. If installed on your home desktop, you can create reminder notes right on your desktop. I know, your are saying big deal, ahhh but wait. The thing I like about this most is if you use multiple computers and Yahoo, when you are at a remote computer you can go to your Yahoo Mail and choose the Notepad tab and create a regular Note file. This note will appear in your desktop notepad widget at your home desktop. So if I’m at work and think of something I need to do when I get home, I can simply go to the Yahoo Mail notepad tab, save a note, then when I get home and go to my home computer, ta da---there’s a note for me in the Widget notepad*. *assuming you keep your net connected and logged in to your yahoo account—if not you’ll see the note as soon as you log in.
Yahoo Bookmarks—the new version. If you know anything about Del.ici.ous or DIGG or any of the other so called “social bookmarking” web sites, you might be interested in the new Yahoo Bookmarks. Yahoo recently bought Del.ici.ous so this may be an offspring of newly acquired technology. For those of you unfamiliar with these web sites, they allow you to create a web page of personal bookmarks that you can access from the internet wherever you are logged on. You are not limited to your personal browser anymore. I’ve tried Del.ici.ous but did not find it compellingly useful. Yahoo Bookmarks has a more dynamic interface and easily allows you to import your existing bookmarks into your personal page. You have the ability to organize by folders (much like you are used to in a browser) or use “tags”. “Tags” allow you to associate keywords with a bookmark so you can search all your collection of bookmarks with that keyword when you are looking for some prior bookmark.
Now for your entertainment....Yo' check this out
